Gossip can be defined as sharing information about another's behavior or personal life, often without the full knowledge of the truth. Slander is making a false statement damaging to a person's reputation. Whether or not gossipers and slanderers intend direct harm, the result is always the same—broken trust and hurt feelings—with consequences as severe as ruined jobs, diminished wealth, and destroyed marriages and families. The tongue is powerful, and we must be careful with our words. God's Word warns us to stay away from people who gossip and to guard our words when we speak about others. Scripture also tells us the kind of words we should and should not speak.
